  abstract = {Several of the more sophisticated fuzzy clustering algorithms, like the Gustafson-Kessel algorithm and the fuzzy maximum likelihood estimation (FMLE) algorithm, offer the possibility to induce clusters of ellipsoidal shape and differing sizes. The same holds for the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm for a mixture of Gaussian distributions. However, these additional degrees of freedom can reduce the robustness of the algorithms, thus sometimes rendering their application problematic, since results are unstable. In this paper we suggest methods to introduce shape and size constraints that handle this problem effectively.},

  abstract = {The principles of machine learning become gradually more interesting to safety-related applications. This paper introduces a preprocessing method for such kind of applications. Here we concentrate on scenarios with highly unbalance misclassification costs. Therefore we briefly introduce a variation of multiple-instance learning (MIL) and recall soft margin hyperplane classifiers. According to this classifier we present a training set selection method for multidimensional problems that combines the idea of support vector pruning with pattern weighting. The proposed method guarantees both high performance and interpretable decisions. The main advantage of our proposed filter method is the obtained training set that rather prefers quasilinear classifiers during model selection. We conclude with potential extensions for future research in this domain.},

As a part of preprocessing and exploratory data analysis, visualization of the data helps to decide which kind of data mining method probably leads to good results or whether outliers or noisy data need to be treated before (Barnett and Lewis, 1994; Hawkins, 1980). Since the visual assessment of a feature space that has more than three dimensions is not possible, it becomes necessary to find an appropriate visualization scheme for such data sets.^M Multidimensional scaling (MDS) is a family of methods that seek to present the important structure of the data in a reduced number of dimensions. Due to the approach of distance preservation that is followed by conventional MDS techniques, resource requirements regarding memory space and computation time are fairly high and prevent their application to large data sets. In this work we will present two methods that visualize high-dimensional data on the plane using a new approach. An algorithm will be presented that allows applying our method on larger data sets.
